ABOUT THE ARTIST
Artist Name: Richard King Jungala
Tribe: Gurindji
Area: Central & Western Desert
Born: Born c. 1969

Richard King was born in 1969 in Katherine, Northern Territory. He spent most of his childhood with his father and uncles, who as members of the Gurindji tribe, taught and mentored Richard. His grandfather who had travelled extensively across the country and had a close connection with the land, passed down his stories and vast knowledge about the desert to the younger man.

Richard has developed his own unique style, which often reflects the deep and complex relationship that he has with the land where he was raised. His work expresses a  combination of practical knowledge such as where to find important food sources, with spiritual and cultural information regarding the Dreamtime.

Richard explains "As a child I often travelled with my father and Uncles they would paint out significant sites and places they had camped on during their travels throughout the Top End. Many of these sites are situated in remote locations. These special places are varied and range from the deserts of Central Australia, across the Barkly Tablelands to the billabong country of the tropical Northern Territory."
