Graham Tjupurrulla lives at Kwikurra, Western Australia. He began painting in 2000 with the famous Papunya Tula Artists.
Graham uses acrylic paint to depict men’s ‘Tingari’ stories and dingo dreamings. In 2002, his work was featured on an Australia Post aboriginal art postage stamp.
Graham is married to Alison Nungarrayi and they have three children. His grandfather is famous artist Helicopter Tjungurrayi. Most of their family live at Balgo, Kintore.
The surface narrative elements that are often termed the painting’s story or ‘Dreaming’ are only one level of an Aboriginal painting’s true significance. The imagery employed by Aboriginal artists has a deep cultural resonance that defies simple logic or narrative interpretations. The western viewer can, however, intuitively feel the power of this spiritual resonance without necessarily having to understand the details, which are only for the initiated members of the community.
