Goodwin Kingsley paints the traditional men’s dreamings of his tribe. Born at Haasts Bluff circa 1950, he spent his younger years in the bush. Goodwin’s traditional country is situated near Nyuuman, south east of Kintore, on Pintupi land. In the 70’s he worked as a stockman at Haasts Bluff, Hermannsburg, Vaughan Springs and Orange Spring. Goodwin comes from a long line of artists, such as Old Mick Namarari, and was instructed by artists Turkey Tolsen Tjupurrula and Charlie Egalie. He began painting for Pupunya Tula Artists in the early 80’s. His work features in the Holmes a’ Court Collection.
The Central and Western Desert Aboriginal communities represent their Dreamtime mythologies in ground painting and body designs. Goodwin’s paintings are an example of these ancient and living traditions painted through a modern medium
During mythological times a group of men camped at Ilyingaugau located southeast of Kintore.
The straight lines represent spears the men are straightening over a fire. The spears are shaped in preparation of possible tribal warfare at Tjikari, located to the north of Ilyingaugau.
