Djawida Nadjongorle was born in the bush of the Arnhem Land. As a young boy he moved to Oenpelli where he attended a mission school. His schooling was minimal, and Djawida mainly lived traditional lifestyle.
On leaving school, Djawida worked on the Oenpelli cattle station as a stockman for some years. Upon finishing work as a stockman he moved to an outstation on the Gumadeer River where he was taught to paint by his father.
Djawida is married and now resides in Oenpelli, continuing to paint. He is known for his fluid, dynamic compositions, and the striking bold colours, which he achieves with the ochre paints he uses. On many occasions he uses four colours in cross-hatching, rather than the two or three which is common. Djawida’s work is rich in spiritual and cultural meaning, which translates through the visual energy of his artwork.
Djawida has travelled extensively throughout Australia with his art, and his work feature prominently in most major collections throughout Australia and overseas, including the Australian National Gallery.
